The Indian Civil Code (commonly known as BNSS) is the main law on the procedure for administering criminal law in India.

On 25 December 2023, the Indian Civil Defense (Second) Code Bill, 2023 received the assent of the President of India.

The BNSS makes several changes to the CrPC, including:

Consolidation and simplification of the law: BNSS consolidates and simplifies the law by repealing and amending several provisions of the CrPC.
Strengthening the rights of the accused: The BNSS strengthens the rights of the accused through several protective provisions, such as the right to counsel, the right to remain silent, and the right to a fair trial.
Improving the efficiency of the criminal justice system: BNSS seeks to improve the efficiency of the criminal justice system through simplifying procedures and reducing delays.
